During my time at MiraCosta College, I was fascinated with creating just about anything, dabbling from installation and kinetic art to two-dimensional representational imagery. After studying a variety of media in the art department of MiraCosta College from 2016-2019, I transferred to Laguna College of Art and Design to become an illustration student. Though my work could be seen more as “fine art” work, I applied what I learn to more illustrative imagery.
The past three years at LCAD have been very formative, honing my skills and knowledge to heights never thought possible in such a short amount of time. My skills as a charcoal artist opened up opportunities for myself. Currently, I intern at Hobrecht Sports Art for world-renowned artist: Dave Hobrecht. There, I paint with charcoal and black pastels to create a variety of sports anywhere from basketball to golf for important clients. It has been such an amazing opportunity to spend the past year using my traditional skills and applying them into the commercial world.
The work presented in this show is a culmination of my more illustrative works combined with typography used in commercial applications. As an illustrator, many opportunities in the industry involve using type in some way to either enhance or be a part of the final product. Whether that be posters, labels, stickers or otherwise, type is an essential part of the illustration. It is important to mention that with type in illustrations, it is never without some sort of reference or foundational typeface. It never ends with simply typing out words and leaving it as part of the final result. Type is always modified in someway to make it unique and more fitting for the subject. These skills combined with a more fine art background produce what is possible in these pieces.
